Find Upholstery+Tacks On Ebay
I’m a portrait painter now, but long ago as a boy I was trained by an old-time upholsterer (my father)…and I can tell you that these magnetic hammers are designed for what they call “spittin’ tacks.” You actually put a small pile of upholstery tacks in your mouth, and rest ‘em down along your jaw, like chewing tobacco; then, using your tongue (no joke) you “manipulate” a single tack from the pile, and place it toward your lips, and with the tack head forward, no less (a difficult skill to develop); finally, you place or “spit” a tack onto the magnetized hammer head (and the curved design helps with this, as you actually put the hammer head into your mouth) and, with a quick turn of the wrist, you whack the tack onto the intended target at just right spot and with just the right force. I used to watch some of these old-timers go whack-whack-whack with terrific speed. Real artisans, those guys. A quality, professional hammer like this is completely necessary. We used to pay a lot more than this, actually.

How do I restore rusted nickle plating on a antique barber chair?
My grandpa was a barber and we still have one of the chairs from his shop. It is a 1912 Presidential barber chair with nickle plating (before chrome). The porcelain and leather Upholstery Tacks are all in great shape. The Nickle trim is pitted with rust and turning green in some places. Also the brass tacks securing the leather are tarnished almost black. What would be the easiest and cheapest way to restore the shine on this chair? I'm looking for a solution somewhere between re-plating it with nickle again and using Mexican Chrome (silver spray paint). BTW: I'm placing this in auto because of the similarity of restoring nickle plating and upholstery.

a 25 piece series for MARN, the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network's spring fund raiser in conjunction with the Spring Gallery night. Found objects, Styrofoam blocks from things that were shipped to me, nails, ephemera, upholstery tacks, keys, thumbtacks, and a lot of glue! I love decoupage and found objects. Fun fun. I made little forests of nails and tacks. I think they look like mushrooms.
